Here are two ideas I had for book cover designs, I tried to keep them minimal, as book covers generally are...... I'm not sure if I succeeded with that, but on the upside I am happy with how they turned out.

I'm working on new pieces for the portfolio at the moment, I'm glad to be indoors since it's pouring with rain outside, I'm enjoying a nice cup of tea and Pride and Prejudice on blu ray. Who knew Colin Firth could look even better in HD? Amazing.

Well, I think I have let this blog slide yet again. So I thought it was about time for an update. First up is an illustration that was commissioned by The Lonely Planet Travel Magazine.

For this illustration I was asked to create an image that would represent an open travel journal, the image is used along side Dan Cruickshank's regular column. Each month he writes about where he has been, and provides photographs of his travels. The photographs are placed over the image to create the look of a journal/photo album.

This next illustration was commissioned by the Radio Times.

I was asked to illustrate for one of the radio choices. It was a play called 'Winter Storm' The play is about a young poet who becomes lost in a snow storm, while waiting for an important telephone call. I really enjoyed working on this image as it gave me the opportunity to paint, I have been working mostly in Photoshop lately so this was definitely a nice change.

I have a couple of updates today, Firstly I think it is okay for me to post this now, here is my image for the Sunday Times Travel Magazine. I was really happy with how it turned out, plus I got to use stamps, which is always a bonus.

I have also updated my website, it has a new layout and a couple of new images.

The first is an image about weight loss, and reaching a target weight. It's a pretty simple image, and didn't take very long to do. I have been trying to simplify things a little bit so it worked out well enough.

This next image is about the police trying to get rid of Internet knife gangs, it's mostly aimed at facebook and users who have pictures showing themselves with knives.

I was recently commissioned by the Sunday Times Travel magazine to illustrate an article about the best way to protect ourselves against malaria when traveling abroad. I have just got an advanced copy of the printed magazine as shown in the above photograph. I even got to use some of my stamps!

Medical students get ipod Teachers

This is an illustration based on an article I read about the university of Derby. They are giving their medical students an ipod each, and it is loaded with demonstrations and tutorials on things like the correct way to X ray people. They have to give it back at the end of the course but I think it's a great idea if people actually use it for that purpose.

Child Friendliness survey

This image is based on a survey done in Africa, about the 'child friendliness' of each country. It takes into account things like laws and policies, spending and education. Kenya came out on top, over much richer countries like Sudan and Angola. I based it on those graphs that seem to be on every page of geography text books.

I'm thinking of changing my Website, I did make a couple of changes last week but now I'm considering a complete makeover. That means I'm going to have to study my Dreamweaver for dummies book for a while. In the meantime I'm trying to do more illustrations to add to or replace the current images on my website.

A few weeks ago I was dragged to a horse show by my parents, It was OK, for about half an hour. I think it was the incredible amounts of mud, mixed with rain and wind that put me off. I liked seeing the horses though, I managed to get a few pictures. I especially like the men in bowler hats, one of them even had a Cain, they were judging a side saddle show. I decided to make this illustration black and white because when I was there, the weather was so horrible that everything looked looked like this.

A couple of days ago I was held hostage in my house by wasps, I blame this on my dad. He went to work and left the back door open so that when I went downstairs there were 3 wasps flying around. I hate wasps, I really hate them, but I did get a picture of one.

Isn't it horrible? I was impressed with my new camera though. It hasn't gone too grainy. I thought it would, I had to zoom in really far because I was too scared to get any closer.

I've neglected this blog lately. I don't know why, but I do want to start using it again. I've changed the look a bit, I think it looks a lot better this way. I especially like the drop down box for my previous posts, I had no idea you could do that. Anyway, here is an ice cream, it was very nice, it was so nice I decided to take a picture of it.

First, as you can see in the picture below I have bought a mac, yay! At the minute it's sitting in my room looking pretty, because I have no Idea how it works. I've learnt what program opens the Internet and how to play music. That's about it so far. I'm still waiting for adobe to send me my serial number. Hopefully it wont take much longer, then I will be able to transfer my uni stuff over to it. The desk is new as well so now I have my own little work area in my room. My mum put it together because I'm to impatient to figure out instructions, I did help by telling her what she was doing wrong, but then I got told to go away and she did it herself.

While I was in Manchester, I visited Topshop and bought.......a dress! It's a miracle, I never thought it would happen but I found a dress that I actually like. I have to say that I feel completely bizarre in it, but that's probably because I haven't worn a dress since I was 15. I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

These are my last three images for my portfolio, I think they turned out pretty good, especially the red one, I didn't like it at all until I saw it in my portfolio, now it's one of my favourites, it weird how that can happen.

I've been working pretty slowly lately, but at least I'm managing to do something, not as much as I should but something non the less. This first image is for an article in Boots Health and Beauty magazine, Its about animal testing beauty products, I like the orange in this one, it's a bit random but it's nice. I couldn't do anything dark or gruesome, it wouldn't really fit into the magazine it was for.

This was for an article in the Guardian, it was about a woman moving into a smaller space, and downsizing her life. I don't like this so much I was trying to do something a bit different, I'm not sure it worked completely but I'm happy enough.

Here is a couple of images I did for my lecturer Sally, I quite like the top one, the bottom I don't like so much. It looked so much better as a portrait image but Sally needed a landscape. It doesn't really matter I just prefered it before.

This is an image I did for our 2nd one week project. I wasn't completley happy with it, the lecturers didn't say anything that I didn't know already. They said it looks a bit sad, it was meant to represent a happy future, I kind of went wrong on that part. I'm going to add more plants and brighten the colours up a bit. I quite like the image as it is, but it doesn't really answer the brief yet. Sally also said that it's similar to my other work, and that she can recognize things that I have used in images before. That's true about this one, I knew that when I did it, but I was having a mental block and couldn't think of anything else to do at the time. I can fix it easily enough.

I have sort of ruined my blog. I was trying to change my header and it went all bizarre and even though I didn't save my changes my old header is gone. It doesn't look colourful thats for sure. I'm too lazy to fix it at the minute. That will be my job when i'm bored of work. I do quite like the position though. I could have something small on the side. I'll figure it out later.

Here is the first image for my honours project. It's not finished yet but this is not far off. It's meant to have a horse in it but our uni library is a bit rubbish sometimes, I couldn't find the reference I needed at all. It's based on a short story by Ted Hughes. I want to finish images quite fast this semester if I can. That way I will be able to produce more and have more options for my portfolio. Thats the plan anyway.

Editorial Project

We've been asked to do 4 one week projects. This is the first one based on a short story called Stanley. It's not quite finished, but it's not far off. I don't like the story, since the girl in it is obviously wierd. I decided to illustrate the scenery because its very discriptive. I quite like it, but I haven't finished yet, I'm worried it might look a bit muddy, and the bank of the canal isn't defined enough yet, I might go down to the canal and take a few pictures and see if they help.

I really like this one, Ladysnail helped me take pictures of the nasty smelly fish in the studio, I quite enjoyed it even though it was a bit gross.

The page has grown! It is now a double page, I haven't decided whether I like it as a double page or a single....dilemma's.

Here is a page dedicated to my hatred for the taste of fish. Again this page gave me rage but I think I've resolved the problem and I like it now. The background is darker as Sally suggested. Ok so it's not loads darker but it's a start. It's a difficult transition!

I finally decided on my external brief! I'm going to enter the D&AD illustration competition. The brief is to create a 16 page A3 book about myself. I think I'm going to do the pages on random things that I like/own, my bird necklace will have to go in there somewhere, it wouldn't be accurate without it. So here is my first page based on shoes. I figured I should put them in since I wear them everyday. It seems fair.

This is the final image for my personal project thank god. I'm sick of looking at it. I will probably have to change something because my lecturers haven't seen this one yet, but I don't mind too much. Hopefully it will only be minor changes. I need to figure out my external project now. At the moment it's between stamp design and penguin books competition. I'm just not sure I want to do another 3 book covers for a project. Atleast these first 3 are done.

The first cover is for a book called 'the island' which is sort of like Captain Corelli's mandolin with a twist of leprosy. It's quite good really but nothing can compare to Captain Corelli. It's very loosley based on the entrance to the leper colony on spinolonga, which is an island next to Crete. It's pretty simple but i'm quite happy with it, plus it's turquoise which is always good.

This next one isn't finished yet, iv'e been working on it all day and to be honest i'm not sure where i'm going with it yet, but I do like it so far. Its for a book called the Italian quarter and it's about an italian family living in London and the story of the grandfather who was a prisoner on war in WW2. It's quite short but I am enjoying it. I just wish I didn't feel so crap, stupid sinuses. It kind of swings between headaches and nausia. I just want to go to bed but I can't because I need to get this work done. Thank god for nurofen and Top Gear.

I have finally got something to put up on here. It's nothing amazing yet and no where near finished but it's a start. It is a book cover for 'The House at Riverton'. I'm doing it for my third year personal project along with two others. I feel I should have a lot more to show but unfortunately I have been lazy, but now I have made a start I feel sure much more work will follow.

People at uni seem to like this one better, for some reason i'm just not convinced. I'll go with it and see what happens but I think I still prefer the first one. I'll have another look at it later and see what I think then.

Editorial

This is an illustration I did for an article called 'Are You Happy?' Which is ironic because I was not happy doing it at the time. I did struggle again, and in the end gave up entirely. I instead decided to focus on my publishing project because I still wasn't happy with it (that post has been updated below). In the end I came back and finished it off. I purposley didn't spend a long time on it. Your never going to get a long deadline for an editorial illustration so it seemed like a good idea to attempt a faster one. I think that was a good idea as I haven't gone over board with it and have kept it relativley simple (something i'm finding increasingly diffiult). The article was only small and talked about a man, who when at work got offered to try a pipe and then rambles about the feelings he had smoking it. This is the last project so I am technically done. I'm going to add things to my projects now and have a think about the dissertation questions which make no sense to me at the minute.

On a side note did anyone see Britney Spears at the vma's? What a disaster! I kind of feel sorry for her after that. It was terrible, if she wasn't planning on singing or dancing she could of at least washed her hair. I wish that woman would just look after her kids already! She angers me.

Here are a couple of Pictures form Jocey's Hen Party, it took a long time to get them but here they are! Kate will appreciate these, we are working the tashes!

Last night I am ashamed to say, I began my life of crime. In the form of....... illegal parking! Oh the horror! I think it's outrageous, I wasn't even parking in a bad place. Stupid residential parking scheme. Some arse gave me a £60 fine for parking outside my friends house without a visibe permit. She has 3 permits registered to her house so I can legally park there, I just didn't have one in my car. So Ive sent an email with all the info from the permits so they can trace it and maybe let me off. I haven't got my hopes up. Who goes checking cars at half 7 anyway? If I pay in 2 weeks I only have to pay £3o, but i'll see if they are kind and let me off first.

This morning I went on a mission to rescue a bumble bee. I'm dead scared of them but this one, Boris was a lovely thing. Bless it, it was so dumb. It was on the window ledge but wouldn't fly to the right where i'd opened window and kept landing in the corner looking all pathetic. If I went near it it started getting all upset. I thought it might be thirsty so I poured a bit of water next to it. It then decided to try and get through the window and bounced off straight on his back in the water, so I nearly drowned it! I had to get it into a glass and take it down stairs to the garden, it scared me a bit I set it free and luckily it did not die. What a nice story lol.

Oh yeah, Ive done no work oh well.

Design

Here are some designs for luggage labels, and above that is a wrapping paper type thing. Just imagine it a lot bigger. I think i'll do some alternatives while i'm lisening to Russel Brand on Radio 2 listen again, I might as well do something usefull while i'm sat here. I've been doing some research into the area of gift wrap, mostly on the paperchase website (i'm going to work for them one day, ive decided). It looks like they have 1 design that's used on a whole range of stationary, on things like diary's, i pod covers, photo albums, pens, mousemats, all sorts of things so technically I only need to do one illustration and they would put it on everything for me, sounds like a good deal to me. (This will happen one day, i'm working on it) I think i'll do another design and then get started on my editorial project which hopefully wont take long and then I am done! I'll go back an add to my projects and have a bit of time to doodle randomness again before uni starts. Were supposed to do a sketchbook of drawings as well as the projects but iv'e combined the 2. I have the same skethbook as ladysnail had last year. It will take all year to fill it so theres no point starting one then droping it to work on another. I hope they don't mind but I wont lose sleep over it. Hey I'm proud of my sketchbook. As I constantly say I hate them, but this time Ive really tried to connect with it and use it as more then a place to scribble and stick in printouts. It's become special.

Anyway I went to Warwick castle on Sunday it was boiling hot and I had a brilliant day. They do the best burgers on a bbq, it makes my mouth water just thinking about them. They do a birds of prey show which I love to see because I love birds, they are amazing things, I don't know how anyone can be afraid of them. I went to the avery afterwards to get a closer look and while I was there, I turned around and saw Lemar standing right next to me holding a bald eagle, how random is that? I didn't speak to him, I don't know how people do that, what the hell do they say to people they've never met? I can imagine what I would say to Lemar, "hey Lemar, you don't know me or anything, but I though i'd say hello. I'm not a big fan and I don't like your music but since your a bit famous I thought i'd introduce myself" I can't see it going down well. I wouldn't speak to someone I liked either to be honest I get so starstruck, if I saw Ewan Mcgreggor walking down the street I' just die of excitment. Not good lol.
I went to the jousting show and my god the red night was gorgeous! especially in his knight costume, just thought i'd mention it.

I saw Bourne ultimatum. It was brilliant but I wish the camera wasn't so shakey all the way through, when I left the cinema I felt like i'd been on a roller coaster. Rush Hour 3 was ok I might go and see Atonement the new Kiera Knighlty film when my friend gets back from spain. I like James Mcavoy and I'm starting to like Keira Knightly these days. I couldn't stand her before but she's grown on me. I didn't mean to ramble so i'll go away now. Oh and thanks Kate for your comment before it was really nice. You always make me feel better about things. X I saw that picture of us with Jon Bugerman I think we looked ok, lets face it it could have been so much worse! lol

Advertising development.

This project has given me so much grief! I kind of hate it. I always seem to get the point where I don't have a proper opinion on my work, Ive looked at it for so long that my judgment has gone bye bye. I have so many variations of this, I look at them in my sketch book and they all the look the freaking same! I need an unbiased opinion, I have no clue.... again lol. I wish I could stop this happening. I think it's harder because i'm not in uni and I have to decide on everything myself, that being said I am the exact opposite of looking forward to uni, god I feel sick just thinking about it, urgh I hate it, it's a shame I aren't the type of person to give up on things, If I was I would just drop out. It's not the course, I quite enjoy it, I do let myself get a bit stressed though. I don't particularly dislike being away from home either but put the two together and I can't stand it, I don't know why, I should stop thinking about this, it normally ends with me in tears and it gets boring after a while. It's getting harder to ignore my worries the closer uni gets. I put off doing my uni work for ages, because I didn't want to think about it but now i'm trying to get it done I don't really have much choice. Luckily I can keep going out to distract myself but i'm still really worried that I wont be able to keep going for another year. My dad keeps using the phrase 'only another year' Only he sais! like it's nothing, unfortunatly I aren't comforted by the idea. I need to suck it up! I never intended to write this so... moving swiftly away from that subject, I hope I will get used to this whole working by myself thing, it's wierd.

I've decided to start the dreaded advertising project. I'm going to do Chester zoo, I went there last Wednesday and feel slightly inspired.....Sort of.

Here is is the beginning stage of what will hopefully become an advert for the zoo. I like how it looks so far. I hope this one will end up looking better than the last. It's not that I don't like the book cover, but I admit I'm not completley happy with the end result. I think I will revisit it when I finish the other projects, I think it would look better if it was simplified. I was looking at book covers today and a lot of them hardly have anything on the cover, atleast the more recent ones don't, minimalism must be the current thing.

Anyway Me and Ladysnail experienced the wonders of the scissor sisters last week. It was my first concert and it did not dissapoint. I had such a good time Jake shears' voice is amazing! Here is a picture from the show, it's not the best, I don't think all the lights were on at this point but you get the gist.

Below is a picture of a tiger from the zoo, it's a pity there was a fence there but it's a pretty good picture. Especially since the tiger is normally asleep when I turn up. I had to chase it all over the place it kept changing direction just as I got my camera ready. It was worth it though, Tigers are my favourite, I could have watched it all day. I was actually born in the year of the tiger, usleless fact for you.

I got a picture of a meerkat as well! I did really well on this trip, meerkat's are really hard to get a picture of aww it's so cute.

And lastly a picture of a rather fat elephant.

Now Kate was wondering where I had gone to before, I'm going to surprise you and show you work, that's right actual work. I admit I've been keeping it secret until now because I finished my publishing project last night! I did it while I watched top gear followed by heroes(Don't know what to make of that show yet) and How to look good naked. Actually I just remembered, I went round my friends house the other day and a remake of psycho was on, it had Vince Vaughn in it randomly hahaha it was terrible. Lol Ive never seen anything like it I don't know why that suddenly came to my head but it makes me laugh the shower scene was just bizarre, I don't think the woman got stabbed once by the look of it. Anyway back to the point, I did a book called invisible cities, and there was a chapter called thin cities, it described a city between two mountains, and instead of the city rising up it was suspended on ropes and houses were hung below connected with ladders. The houses are described as being 'made like sacks'. So below is a sort of texture mountain and sky.

This is a sketch of what I imagined the houses to look like.

I found some proper 70's material that my mum kept, It's horrible but nice at the same time, I drew out a couple of house shapes and put the material in to look like a stitched sack house.

After many many alterations and loads of print outs I have finished. I'm not exactly sure wether I am happy with the out come. I have got to the point where Ive sat looking at it for so long that iv'e lost the whole concept of what works and what doesn't. I might come back and tweak it a bit but for now I class this proct finished! Besides it's a bit of an experiment since it was digitally put together with like 90 layers in photoshop, can't say ive done that before, so with that in mind i'm quite happy with it, it's something I'm working to improve.

Now I'm going to read some Harry potter with a cup of tea, then put my work in the sketchbook and play the PlayStation. I'm going shopping tomorrow so I don't want to leave it and then forget.

And here is me! I like the hands, they remind me of rag dolls, or something like that, so there you are, some doodles cleverly disguised as work. I really should do something for a project. I have an idea, wrote it down and everything, I think I diserve a biscuit. I'm going to do a front cover for a book called invisible cities, I have a few sketches but none that I can show, thier fair rough at the minute. I'll have to do something today because I'm busy all weekend, Harry Potter yeah!

This means I have kept my promise.

On Saturday Inspector Marmalade, Ladysnail and myself made an agreement. We decided that by tonight, all of us will have completed a sketchbook page. Here is mine.

Okay I will admit it has nothing to do with the four projects we have to do but it's a start. I suppose I havent really kept my promise, but i'm atleast halfway there! The scan isn't the best, having a square sketchbook can sometimes be a pain, especially with scanning. I really don't feel like fighting my scanner to get the picture straight but you get the jist. Now I will wait to see if the others have kept thier end of the deal.

Oh deary me Ive had a disaster! Myspace has thrown me out. Ok perhaps it's not that much of a disaster but it's really annoying. I was using it on Tuesday night and it was fine, but it's now decided it doesn't want me to log in, even though I save my settings. It keeps saying "You must be logged in to do that!" Why would I need to be logged in to log in? Grrr myspace is crap sometimes. And today I went shopping in my shiny new car but when I came back to the car park my windscreen was cracked! (cries). I hope my dad doesn't kill me he's normally ok with this stuff. I have no idea how it's happened it's only tiny so god knows what's done it.

On a happier note only 23 days untill the new Harry Potter book, i'm so excited, oh yeah and my best friend is getting married that day.....but it's Harry freaking Potter! Oooh Harry better not snuff it I will not be impressed. So that's all I wanted to say.......So pointless lol.

Well here are some legs. It's a bit of a collage I did yesturday. I'm trying some stuff out, combining my collages with the computor. It seems to work better when I use photoshop. I quite like it actually but it's only a simple thing. I'll work up to the more complex stuff. I feel so slow when I'm using computors. Oh well. I still hate illustrator though lol.

Summer Projects

I'm now starting to ponder the summer briefs. I feel like I should have done this already, especially since Kevin said to spend about a month on each. Well a month has already passed so it looks like its 3 weeks per project now, thats still okay though. In my defence we didn't get the brief until 2 weeks ago. Anyway Ive got 4 topics, everything else is up to me. It's quite hard to decide what to do, not because I can't think of anything (then i'd be worried) but because there is loads of things that I want to do. The 4 topics are, Design, Publishing, Editorial and the deadly advertising. Design is such a broad subject though, everything that's man-made is designed by somebody. Hmmm I'm thinking now might be the time to begin my mighty gift wrap empire, I could do sets of wrapping paper and gift tags. Or maybe I could try greeting cards, I think I'd like to try something stationary based, involving pattern of some kind, that would be fun. For publishing I might do the secret garden or invisible cities, I'll have to do a bit of research before I decide on that one, I want to do a good one. The problem comes when I get to Editorial and advertising, I can't stand either of them, it's probably best to keep thinking about them while I do the others. I could do a guardian article like the 'how to' project only good this time. I'm not sure yet.

On a slightly random note, I think I was being a bit optimistic when I said I'd get over my tutorial soon, god im still sooooooo pissed off, I can't think about it without seeing the red mist. It cut me deep! Okay so maybe that's a bit ott but it still makes me so mad! So yeah that's all I wanted to ramble about, oh and I bought a new car yesturday! I'm picking it up on saturday oooh im so excited.

Here is another attempt at live trace although I have now decided that I don't like this guys face. Apart from that I think it's ok, I just put some nice scanned texture in there, it's made up of paint, tissue paper and mesh to make them look like scales. I need to keep practising though.

Ah result! Thanks to hydra arts I have finally figured out the 'dodgy colour' problem. When I opened the document in photoshop I just had to change the CMYK to RGB in the dialog box, simple as that. Ive been trying to figure it out since we did the digital elective, but there we are. Ladysnail will be impressed because I know she has had the same problem. Anyway here are some mushrooms, I don't know why, I just decided to draw them the other day and thought I could practice this live trace thing in illustrator. I might put a mustache on one just for inspetor marmalade, I think she'd like that. I think they're cute.

Illustrator

Okay, I have a question, and if anybody knows the answer to this please tell me! Okay so whenever I do anything in illustrator and save it, it's not compatable with anything including this site, it needs to be a jpeg. So I opened the file in photoshop and saved it as a jpeg. But it wont upload on any image hosting sites and on here all the colours go wierd. My lecturer Ali said something about saving it as an eps or something like that, I tried that and I tried pdf and all the rest but I still have the same problem. I even tried to copy and paste the image to photoshop but that didn't work either. So my question is this, what do you save an image as is ilustrator? and how do you make it compatible to anything? I just don't know what else to try, tis very confusing to me, maybe my work in illustrator is meant to be kept secret because it seems like it doesnt want to be seen by anybody! It's in there holding on to dear life, saying no! I'm staying in your C drive and thats it. So yeah any help would be so appreciated!

Awww lovely fish! This is my very first collage so it's very special. I did line drawings scanned them in and printed them, then put the paint down and transferred the printout onto the paper. It's my favourite thing to do since I love colour.

Hemoglobin

These are images based on hemoglobin, the red pictures are of oxygenated blood cells travelling around the body.....

.......and the blue pictures are deoxygenated blood cells on thier merry way back to the lungs. So what I did was make two collages of the red and blue cells, then cut them up and turned them into 2 sets of 5 postcards so that oxygen was sent in the post. On the back of the red postcards I wrote letters to 5 different muscles telling them what to do with the oxygen. Then I had people at uni write the replies on the back of the blue postcards saying thankyou and returning the deoxygenated blood cells back to me (the lungs)

It's a bit hard to explain now, I hope somebody understands what i'm attempting to say lol.

Packaging 2

These are the pieces of work I did for the Packaging brief before they were turned into labels.
They look a bit off because I shrank them on the photocopier then scanned the photocopy, but they still look ok. It's one piece of work that has been cut into 2 because when I tried to reduce it from A3 to A4 it kept putting it the wrong way so half get cut off. I don't know how to change it because an A3 piece of paper wont fit on any other way, a mystery.

We have to do a pecha Kucha on Monday, which is a presentation on images that inspire us, it's only 3 and a half minutes, so I shouldn't worry, but I don't like presentations so I will be happy when I have done it.

Palimpsest

I really like this one, it's so random. It's full of little bits and pieces that I either drew or collected. I remember I was really into buttons and luggage tags at the time. And there is Bert in the bottom left corner, I stitched his outline and battered my fingers in the process, It was worth it though.

Car Manuals

These are my first attempt at screen printing back in September. I was really impressed with them considering it was my first try, I have to thank LadySnail for all her help since I had no idea what I was doing until she went through it all with me. We were asked to create a series of 10 artists books and I did mine on car manuals. I collaged manuals together and drew car engines, then combined them using screen printing.

The Pictures below are the first collages I did for the project, I really enjoyed doing this project it was one of my favourites this year.

Parrots

This is a flyer for an issues and beliefs project we did last year, to be honest I hated this project, I found it really difficult. I chose to do my project on the wild bird trade and basically collaged together pictures of birds being caught, and then on the back wrote the info about the problem. I actually got a good mark for this. I was amazed! I do like this one though, it features my favourite colour....Blue!

My Final Digital Elective Pictures

This is the final image for Illustrator, now it might look er...blue BUT, it's not meant to be! I have no idea why it's uploaded like this. It looks like the blues and browns have swapped, so he looks like some kind of alien. Which is odd, because i'm looking at the picture in photoshop and it looks completely fine. Maybe taking it into photoshop has done something to it. We were asked to save it as a jpeg, so it must have to be taken into photoshop, I don't get it. Iv'e tried emailing it and that doesn't work either. I don't know what's wrong. I'll have to email it and hope for the best.

This is the photoshop one, I'm reasonably happy with it, it's something completely different from my usual work, which I suppose is a good thing, but at the same time I kind of wish it had some elements of collage or texture in it instead of being purely digital, but I think it turned out pretty well in the end. I still don't particularly like digital work but if I keep working on it maybe I will find a way to combine my collages and digital work. My mission for the summer.

Repackaging

This is for a repackaging brief, we were asked to repackage an exsisting product to raise its value. I chose a plant food called wonder gro, my idea was to show a series of plants or trees getting larger. It was originally in the box, but I thought it would be a good idea to put labels on cans to play with the idea of plant food. I also cut a plant pot shaped hole in the front of the box because I really liked the colour of the actual product. I'm really happy with the outcome of this project, it's a pity the photograph has a bit of an orange glow, I suppose i'll have to redo it.

2nd Book Cover

This is the 2nd cover, this one is for Around the world in 80 days. My lecturers seem to think this one is the stronger of the two. I really wish they didn't because I prefer the first cover. I did alot of this in photoshop which automatically makes me like it less. This is actually my second attempt at this, my first one went a bit wrong, but there was one part of the image that people seemed to like, so I zoomed in on that and recreated it using photoshop and my original scans to fill the whole space and changed the colours. I do like it, just not as much.

Book Cover

This was a collage that I did for a book cover of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, minus the text obviously. I really didn't wan't to do picture of a squid or the Nautillus, it just seemed so obvious. Besides the character's in this book spend half of thier time looking at fish and naming them, it's filled with descriptions of underwater scenes so I decided that that was what I was going to do. I really like this one, mostly because I think it's pretty to look at. That's about it really lol. I'm loving the tissue paper at the moment. I can't get enough of the stuff!

Digital Elective

I'm currently working on a digital project for uni. It's not something that I feel comfortable with, it's taking ages to paint in photoshop but considering it's my first attempt i'm quite happy with how it's going. We were asked to create 2 illustrations, 1 in Photoshop and 1 in Illustrator. I'm working on the photoshop one at the moment. It's based on a 'how to' article in the guardian, my article is called how to tinker and basically talks about men messing with things that they really don't need to.

I still need to neaten up the tv and add lots of tools around the floor but so far I think it's going okay. I will hopefully have it finished within the next day or so, atleast I will if I don't get distracted. I actually think the guy upstairs has bought a trampoline he's making so much noise.......nice.

I have finally decided to follow Ladysnail's example and have signed up to post my illustration work. I'm not used to doing this sort of thing, the idea of putting my work up for people to see makes me quite nervous, but I suppose that I will have to get used to it at some point. I will work on scanning some stuff to put up on here over the next couple of days. I hope people will like it, well if you like colour you will probably like my work, anyway I will get started on scanning and hopefully have something up soon. X
